Since their first release in 2022, the Portland-based duo Puerta Negra have become one of the most raucous and exciting current acts with their particular biting concoction of EBM. Their new EP on SYNTHICIDE, ‘Playa Sola,’ focuses on movement: with an infrastructure of aggressive beats that demand the body’s participation, there’s no other option but to dance.

Side A begins with “Caída al Mal,” a track that exemplifies the balance that Puerta Negra masters so well. It’s tough, but just enough. There’s room for the music to breathe, a lightness that radiates as colossal, beefy synths swell and dive under the severe growl of Maria Aguirre and Mark Arciaga’s vocals. “Control” locks in a sweltering groove that's reminiscent of 80s industrial dance greats, such as Manufacture or their Nettwerk peers. It’s grimy and covered in filth—just the way we like it.

The flip side of ‘Playa Sola’ introduces “Golpe Tras Golpe,” a track doused in pure EBM greatness that harkens High-Functioning Flesh and Physical Wash with their precise beats underneath passionate melodic stabs. Lastly, “No Olvidado” teems with raw emotion, it is a vibrant interpretation of dance music filtered through the chaotic lineage of punk. There’s a tireless energy that emanates with ‘Playa Sola,’ a collection of four tracks that are impossible to forget too soon.
